Movie Poster Art as an Investment

Movie poster art and memorabilia is one of the fastest growing collectible categories today. Everyone one loves movies. You can still buy an original copy of movie poster art from your movie for substantially less than the equivalent vintage product in other categories like stamps, coins, sports cards and comic books for example. Unlike most of the products found in other collectible categories though, you can display your favorites for everyone to see.

What is important to note is that in the last 10 years we have witnessed significant increases in the value of many different kinds of movie poster art. Some of the actors who are particularily popular are Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman along with Clint Eastwood, Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable. All Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock films are very collectible. Most James Bond films, particularily the films starring Sean Connery, have also increased significantly in value.

Day the Earth Stood StillParticularly popular today are 1950’s science fiction titles. If you had owned copies of "Forbidden Planet"and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" five or six years ago, they would be worth significantly more today than when they were just 5 years ago. The highest amount ever paid at auction for movie poster art was in 1997 at Sothebys, where an original one sheet poster for the 1932 movie "The Mummy" sold for an unbelievable $453,500.

There are countless film titles that are popoular in today’s market trying to find that title that could mean something to you and ultimately be worth much more in the future is part of the fun of collecting! We have listed some examples below to give you a sense of how these posters have appreciated. Have a look for yourself. A quick reminder…most of these posters were in mint or near mint condition. The chart below represents but a very small example of the kinds of increases the market has seen over the years on poster art. Many of the prices realized were at major auction houses and prices definitely reflect the higher end of the scale.

eBay is redefining the market on a daily basis. If you are interested in movie poster art from a particular film be sure to search for it on eBay to get a a better sense of today’s current market prices.
